Laughter is the Best Medicine

Learn the Top 5 ways to increase laughter in your life!

From Spa L’Auberge

One of the first responses we learn after we are born is how to laugh. As we grow, we develop our ability to laugh and use it for a wide range of purposes. The amazing thing about positive laughter is that it’s contagious. Think about how many times you have laughed at someone’s laugh without even knowing the reason why they were laughing – we are actually hard wired to find laughter funny!

Laughter is also good for us physiologically. Research shows laughter can help blood vessels function better, lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, relieve pain and reduce stress hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine and adrenaline, thereby helping to guard against weight gain, heart strain and lack of sleep.

Here are 5 ways to increase laughter in your life:

  1. Make a conscious effort to go to a comedy club, or turn your Pandora to a comedy station while you are stuck in traffic
  2. Make a laughter board for your home or workplace with photos that make you laugh
  3. Try to use positive language, not just verbally, but in your internal dialogue as well. Substitute words such as “hard” for “challenging”
  4. Be aware of the things that make you laugh, and build a mental stock of these laughter triggers to be recalled at stressful times
  5. Spend more time with the people who make you laugh, and less time with those who don’t
